I believe that any musician can benefit greatly from having at least a basic understanding of music theory. Of course, there is no substitute for putting the time into practicing your instrument. However, a solid theory understanding will help you to improve significantly in both your ability as a musician, composer and songwriter. You do not need to have played an instrument before you start to learn music theory. Conversely, you could also be at an advanced level on your instrument before you begin your theory lessons. Children over the age of 8 years old are also welcome to start having music theory classes with me. I’ve tried to take some music theory classes before and I just got overwhelmed. I really need to study it though, my teacher told me to find something that works right for me.
